Gray Western Electric 50-A 1 loc W1
Gray #50A, manual prepay payphone or paystation. This antique telephone was made for the Bell System, it has a Western Electric coin relay. This is the first model of the standard 3 slot payphone ca 1911. The upper, backboard and lower are cast iron. The name tag above the vault is bronze. The vault door is flat steel. There is no dial cup cut into the upper housing, this was made before the dial was available. Production was short lived because the cast vault was extremely vulnerable. The lower lock is an 11A and the upper housing lock is an E10E. View my article Gray/WE 50A
